If you have decided to hire heavy machinery for a construction project, you will need to decide whether you also want to hire an operator along with the machine, or if you will source your own operator. This is an important decision that should not be made lightly. Here are some pros and cons of hiring an operator.
Pros
If you hire an operator from the plant hire company, you know you will be hiring someone with a lot of training and experience in using the machine. They are unlikely to take risks with the equipment, as it is in their interests to ensure that it stays in good working order. This will keep breakdowns and problems to a minimum, and they may have enough working knowledge to deal with any problems as they arrive.
This is also the route that takes the least effort. If you go with the company's operator, you will avoid the hassle of finding an operator yourself, or of ensuring that your own employees are properly trained and capable of using the machine. The operator will need to be licensed and experienced wherever they come from, and using the hire firm's operator will cut down on administration.
Cons
The most obvious drawback to hiring an operator is that this will increase the costs. You may be able to negotiate a cheaper deal with a third-party company; and if you have employees capable of doing the job, you can use them without paying for extra manpower at all. This also has the advantage of cutting down the number of people on site, which makes safety and other personnel issues easier to manage.
Also, although your employees may not be so familiar with the equipment, they will be more familiar with the project itself and will have a better understanding of what is required. Your employees will have a greater interest in delivering work of excellent quality and will have a good idea of what results are expected.
If you feel you can provide the workforce yourself, there is no reason why you should not save the money; however, you should remember that this equipment needs a lot of knowledge and experience to use effectively. Talk to your plant hire company about your needs, and you should be able to make a decision that gets the work done effectively, safely and in the most cost-effective way.
